Intel’s Ultra-Powerhouse: Will the Arrow Lake-S Core Ultra 9 285K Break the $10,000 Barrier in Japan
Intel’s Arrow Lake-S Core Ultra 9 285K: Pricing and Performance Expectations
Intel’s next-generation desktop CPU, the “Arrow Lake-S” generation Core Ultra 200K series, is scheduled for announcement and release in mid-October 2024. Recently, a total of five models of this unannounced Core Ultra 200K series were discovered listed on the UK online shop KambdaTek, revealing rough pricing and lineup information.
The products featured are the overclockable “K” variants of the Core Ultra 200 series, ranging from the flagship Core Ultra 9 285K, to the Core Ultra 7 265K/KF, and the mid-range Core Ultra 5 245K/KF.
| Model | GBP Reference | Japanese Yen (£=187) + 10% tax | Launch Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core Ultra 9 285K | £471.83 | ¥97,055 | ¥109,800 |
| Core Ultra 7 265K | £327.35 | ¥67,336 | ¥78,800 |
| Core Ultra 7 265KF | £314.60 | ¥64,713 | ¥74,800 |
| Core Ultra 5 245K | £250.86 | ¥51,602 | ¥59,800 |
| Core Ultra 5 245KF | £238.11 | ¥48,979 | ¥55,800 |
The listed prices for the Core Ultra 200K series are for reference only as they have not yet been released, but compared to the current Raptor Lake Refresh generation of equivalent products, the high-end models have dropped in price. The Core Ultra 9 285K is 2% cheaper than the previous model, and the Core Ultra 7 265K is 6.5% cheaper. On the other hand, models below the Core Ultra 7 265K are on the rise, with the Core Ultra 5 245KF being 10% more expensive than the previous Core i5-14600KF.
As for the expected price in Japan, if you add the exchange rate and 10% consumption tax to the price of the latest CPUs such as Intel Raptor Lake Refresh listed on LambdaTek, you will get close to the selling price in Japan. If you apply this calculation method to the price of the Core Ultra 200K series, you can see a 10-15% price drop trend for all models. The Core Ultra 9 285K is approaching 100,000 yen, and the Core Ultra 5 245K is under 50,000 yen, making them quite cheap.
However, the UK sales price is only a reference price, and in Japan there are many additional factors to consider, such as the weak yen, rising logistics costs, and agency fees, so it is unlikely that it will actually be sold this cheap. In the best case scenario, it is expected to be sold at about the same price as the previous Raptor Lake Refresh.
Intel’s Arrow Lake-S is manufactured using the TSMC 3nm process, which has many cost-increasing factors. However, AMD’s price cuts for the Ryzen 9000 series may have also influenced this, so it seems unlikely that there will be a significant price increase for Raptor Lake Refresh, at least.
Now we’re left to worry about performance, but since Intel plans to launch Arrow Lake Refresh as the successor to Arrow Lake-S, the Core Ultra 9 285K will at least have gaming performance that exceeds the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, and its multi-core performance must be at a level that clearly surpasses the Ryzen 9 9950X in order to withstand the onslaught of the Ryzen 9000X3D series, so we hope that the processor will be fully optimized and released at the earliest possible date.
