Intermountain Health,the Intermountain West’s largest nonprofit health system,is partnering with Layer Health,a Boston-based AI startup,to enhance its clinical data abstraction processes. The multi-year collaboration ⁢will ‍see Intermountain Ventures ⁤invest in Layer Health and deploy⁣ its large language models (LLMs) across several ‍clinical registries.

Clinical data abstraction, ‍the manual extraction of key patient information from medical records, is⁢ a time-consuming task.Layer Health’s technology automates this process, converting unstructured data into standardized, usable formats. CEO David Sontag explained⁣ that their AI models analyze patient records to answer registry questions, such as determining if thrombolysis was administered for a stroke patient and, if not, ⁤the reason.

The partnership will initially focus on ⁢registries related to cardiovascular health,stroke treatment,and ⁢bariatric surgery. Sontag noted that Layer Health’s software allows Intermountain’s staff to focus on operational improvements⁢ derived⁢ from the data, rather than spending the majority of their time collecting it.This strategic investment aims to improve the role of healthcare professionals by leveraging AI for better clinical data management.
