Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization announced that international flights will resume from Mashhad Airport starting Monday, marking the beginning of a phased reopening of Iranian airspace with transit flights and eastern airports prioritized.

The decision, disclosed on April 19, 2026, allows travelers to purchase tickets for international routes to and from Mashhad, Iran’s second-largest city and a major religious tourism hub. This move follows months of restricted international air traffic due to ongoing geopolitical tensions and security considerations affecting civil aviation operations across the country.

According to the Civil Aviation Organization, the resumption is part of a broader strategy to gradually restore international connectivity, beginning with eastern airports like Mashhad before expanding to other regions. Transit flights — those passing through Iranian airspace without landing — are also being prioritized in the initial phase, signaling efforts to reclaim Iran’s role in regional air corridors.

Mashhad Airport, officially known as Shahid Hasheminejad International Airport, serves as a critical gateway for pilgrims traveling to the Imam Reza Shrine, one of the most visited religious sites in Shia Islam. The restoration of international flights is expected to boost tourism-related revenue, particularly from neighboring countries such as Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, where large numbers of visitors traditionally originate.

Industry analysts note that the phased approach reflects a calibrated response to both security assessments and infrastructure readiness. While Tehran’s main airports — Imam Khomeini International Airport and Mehrabad Airport — remain subject to tighter restrictions, the focus on eastern provinces aims to stimulate economic activity in less-served regions while managing risk.

The Civil Aviation Organization has not disclosed specific passenger volume targets or timelines for subsequent phases of the reopening. However, officials confirmed that all international flights will operate under enhanced security protocols, including advance passenger information sharing and coordination with international aviation authorities.

Tickets for international routes from Mashhad are now available through airline booking systems and Iranian travel agencies. Carriers operating from the airport include Iran Air, Mahan Air, and several regional airlines, with destinations expected to include cities in the Gulf, Central Asia, and South Asia.

This development comes amid broader efforts by Iran to revitalize its aviation sector, which has faced challenges due to sanctions, fleet aging, and reduced international connectivity. The resumption of flights from Mashhad represents a tangible step toward restoring air links, though full normalization of Iranian airspace remains contingent on evolving regional dynamics and diplomatic engagements.
