Interns Shaping the future of AI: A glimpse into Google’s Innovation
Table of Contents
This summer, as thousands of students worldwide embark on their Google internships, a common thread emerges when they’re asked about their choice: the unparalleled prospect to contribute to real-world projects with notable global impact. While the allure of developing skills in a high-performance environment and collaborating with leading AI innovators is undeniable, the most compelling reason cited by Google interns is the chance to engage in meaningful work that directly improves tools and technologies used by billions. To celebrate International Intern Day 2025, we sat down with three Google interns deeply involved in artificial intelligence and machine learning to explore their groundbreaking projects and the motivations behind their impactful work.
Lalit Mohanani: Software Engineering Intern | Pune,India
“Google has always been my dream,” shares Lalit Mohanani,a software engineering intern based in Pune, india. “I was driven by the prospect of working on projects with massive, positive impact, projects that could define new industry standards.” Lalit’s current project focuses on enhancing AI interaction security. He is developing a system that allows clients to cryptographically verify that an AI server is running correct, unmodified code within a confidential environment before any data exchange occurs. This ensures end-to-end privacy and security in a zero-trust environment. “This work has the potential to considerably increase AI adoption in security-critical sectors like finance and healthcare,” Lalit explains. “For me, it’s incredibly meaningful – a practical solution that enables safe AI for critical applications.”
HyoJung Han: Research Intern on Google Translate | Mountain View,USA
HyoJung Han,a research intern working on Google Translate in Mountain View,USA,is tackling a nuanced challenge within multilingual large language models (LLMs). “LLMs are extraordinary at generalizing global knowlege,” HyoJung notes, “but they can inadvertently overlook or even undermine the subtleties of different cultures, viewpoints, and facts.” Her project is dedicated to developing a more holistic framework to identify instances where cultural context is diluted or misrepresented. “By understanding these potential pitfalls,” she elaborates, “we can develop methods to teach llms how to share universal knowledge effectively while simultaneously preserving the unique nuances and perspectives that define each culture.”
Jonathan Shamwana: Associate Product Management Intern, YouTube Ads | mountain View, USA
Jonathan Shamwana, an associate product management intern on the YouTube Ads team in Mountain View, USA, was drawn to Google’s ethos of empowering creators and users alike. “I was attracted to Google because it truly empowers engineers, artists, and creators,” Jonathan states. This summer, he’s been immersed in experimenting with the latest generative AI models across his projects. As a dedicated YouTube user himself, Jonathan finds immense satisfaction in contributing to a better viewing experience. “My work,” he adds, “also lays crucial groundwork for fostering closer collaboration between YouTube and other product areas within Google.”
