Internet Trolls Around the World Mock Trump’s Military Birthday Parade
trump’s Military Parade Draws Online Mockery
Donald Trump’s military parade in Washington, D.C., ostensibly celebrating the Army’s 250th birthday, became the target of online mockery. Social media users contrasted the event with military parades from other countries, highlighting differences in crowd size and marching precision.
One X account, identified by Julia Ioffe of Puck News as russian, juxtaposed footage of North Korean soldiers marching in perfect synchronization with video from the U.S. Army parade. The caption, according to Ioffe, read: “How Trump imagined his parade [vs] What he actually saw.” Some observers noted that U.S. troops may have been under orders to march at a more relaxed “Route Step March.”
Other accounts shared videos of Mexico’s Independence day parade and india’s Republic Day parade, further emphasizing the perceived differences in scale and precision.
Trump has previously expressed admiration for military displays. After attending France’s Bastille Day festivity in 2017, he told reporters, “It was one of the greatest parades I’ve ever seen… We’re going to have to try to top it.” Karen Tumulty,a Washington Post columnist, noted Trump’s long-standing interest in showcasing military strength, recalling a pre-inauguration interview were he envisioned military parades in New York City and Washington,D.C.
california Gov. Gavin Newsom criticized the parade as a “vulgar display” reminiscent of those held by dictators. He made the remarks during a news conference Friday.
What’s next
The online conversation surrounding the parade is highly likely to continue, possibly influencing public perception of future military events and the role of military displays in national identity.
