A new survey reveals that a staggering 94.4% of Cyprus’s population uses the internet at least weekly, showcasing the Mediterranean island nation’s impressive digital connectivity. The findings, released by the Statistical Service of Cyprus, paint a stark contrast to internet penetration rates in the United States, where access and usage remain uneven.
The Cypriot survey, conducted between April and June 2024, encompassed 1,838 households and 3,763 individuals aged 16 to 74. It aimed to gauge access to data and interaction technologies (ICT), internet usage patterns, and engagement with e-government and e-commerce platforms.
Age and Education Influence Internet Use
The survey revealed a clear correlation between age and internet usage, with younger generations demonstrating substantially higher adoption rates. Nearly all (99.9%) individuals aged 16 to 24 reported using the internet, compared to 83.3% of those aged 55 to 74.
Education level also played a role, with individuals holding higher educational attainment levels exhibiting more frequent internet use (99.6%) compared to those with lower levels of education (76.8%).
From social Media to Online Learning: How Cypriots Use the Internet
The survey shed light on the diverse ways Cypriots utilize the internet. Popular activities included instant messaging via platforms like Skype, Messenger, WhatsApp, and viber (97.3%), making internet calls (97.2%), researching goods and services (94.3%), engaging on social networks like Facebook and Twitter (91.8%), and watching online video content (91.3%).
Interestingly, a growing number of Cypriots are leveraging the internet for educational purposes. 10.3% accessed online educational materials, 10% enrolled in online courses, and 9.7% communicated with educators or learners using online tools.E-Government and E-Commerce on the Rise
The survey also highlighted the increasing adoption of e-government services in Cyprus. 70.6% of individuals aged 16 to 74 obtained information from public authorities online, 54% accessed their personal data held by public services, and 22.8% utilized public databases and registers.
E-commerce is also experiencing a surge in popularity. 63.6% of individuals aged 16 to 74 placed online orders during the first quarter of 2024, a important jump from 55.3% in the same period of 2023.
Popular online purchases included clothing, shoes, and accessories (85.3%), restaurant deliveries (78.8%), computers and mobile phones (53.4%), and cosmetics (33.4%).

While Cyprus celebrates near-universal internet access, the United States grapples with a persistent digital divide. Factors like socioeconomic status, geographic location, and lack of infrastructure contribute to disparities in internet access and usage.
