Winston-Salem Police Chief William Penn confirmed that a 16-year-old and a 17-year-old were pronounced dead at the scene around 10 a.m. On Monday, April 20, 2026, following the incident. Five additional victims — four females and one male, ranging in age from 14 to 19 — were shot and transported to local hospitals with injuries varying from critical to minor.
According to police, the shooting began after a planned confrontation between two young people turned violent. “Multiple individuals began shooting at each other” after the situation escalated, Chief Penn said during a news conference Monday afternoon. Officials stated that multiple people fired guns during the exchange.
