The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has concluded a series of venue inspections in Lyon, declaring itself highly reassured by the progress made ahead of the French Alps 2030 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, according to official statements reported by multiple outlets including France Info and Eurosport.

IOC Validates Ice Sport Venues in Lyon and Metropolitan Area

Pierre-Olivier Beckers, president of the IOC coordination commission, addressed a press conference in Lyon to confirm that the organization’s inspection team was fully convinced by the direction of the project. Beckers stated that the coordination commission leaves the city très rassurée par les progrès accomplis, confiante dans l’orientation prise par le projet et enthousiaste sur l’ambition du projet, and added that the foundations for the 2030 Games are solid and well‑anchored. During the inspection, the coordination commission finalized the allocation of disciplines across Lyon and its surrounding metropolitan area. The venue distribution covers several key facilities to host nearly 80 ice hockey matches, figure skating, short‑track speed skating, curling, and synchronized skating, which makes its official debut on the Olympic program. The ice hockey schedule will split matches between the Halle Tony‑Garnier in central Lyon and the LDLC Arena in Décines‑Charpieu. The LDLC Arena, which boasts a larger seating capacity, will host the medal rounds for both men’s and women’s tournaments. Meanwhile, the Eurexpo exhibition park in Chassiue has been designated to host curling, short‑track, figure skating, and synchronized skating. Eurexpo will also house the main media centre for the Games, providing workspace for thousands of journalists, technical personnel, international broadcasters, and production crews.

Alpine Skiing Venues Set for Courchevel and Val d’Isère

Beyond the ice events in Lyon, the IOC has confirmed the competition footprints for alpine skiing events. Technical events, including the slalom and giant slalom, will take place in Val d’Isère.

Addressing Governance Challenges and Relocated Disciplines

The successful venue validation arrives during a period of transition for the organizing committee (COJOP). Earlier in the year, organizers were forced to relocate the entire ice sports hub from Nice to Lyon after the mayor of Nice declined to host a temporary rink within the Baie des anges football stadium. The project also absorbed a leadership shift following the departure of former COJOP president Edgar Grospiron amid a governance crisis. In response to the vacancy, Vincent Roberti, the organizing committee’s number two official since June, was designated to take over the interim presidency. With the venue blueprint locked in and official IOC backing secured following the Lyon evaluations, organizers turn their focus toward detailed operational planning ahead of the 2030 winter showcase.
