Die deutsche Olympia-Bewerbung mit München hat im Rennen um die Sommerspiele 2036 Konkurrenz aus sechs Ländern, wie das Internationale Olympische Komitee mitteilte. Munich’s national project must contend with international applicants including Qatar, India, South Korea, Hungary, Turkey, and South Africa.
International Field for 2036
The International Olympic Committee named the full field of six rival nations alongside the German application. Munich secured the domestic spot after winning the national selection process over the project from Köln-Rhein-Ruhr. Hamburg’s bid previously failed in a public referendum, while Berlin withdrew its candidacy before the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) reached a decision.
Munich Shifts Focus If Asian Candidates Win 2036
The DOSB submitted the German application to the IOC for the 2036, 2040, or 2044 Summer Games. If the 2036 Olympics go to an Asian candidate, Munich will automatically shift its focus to run as the DOSB applicant for the two subsequent editions. Katar long maintained status as a strong contender, but regional instability presents a potential risk factor. Indiens plans centered around Ahmedabad have also encountered questions regarding whether funding and implementation can be secured by 2036.

Munich Projects Ten Billion Euros in Hosting Costs
Among European competitors, Turkey’s metropolis Istanbul has pursued the Olympics through multiple unsuccessful bids. Hungary and its capital Budapest have similarly maintained an interest in hosting the Summer Games. Munich organizers have projected total costs for hosting the Olympics at approximately ten billion euros. Ticket revenues are expected to cover five billion euros of the organization costs, with remaining funds allocated to infrastructure projects.
IOC Will Select Preferred Hosts in December 2028
Munich and the DOSB must submit detailed plans and financial guarantees to the IOC before the preliminary selection concludes. The IOC will decide next March which applicants advance into the second phase known as the strategic dialog. The organization plans to narrow the field to a select group of preferred hosts in December 2028 before the final host selection takes place in mid-2029.
