Indonesia’s Olympic Ambitions

Indonesia is actively considering⁣ a bid ‍to host the 2036 Summer Olympic Games,aiming to showcase the ⁢nation’s⁢ sporting prowess and national identity on a global stage. This ambition was underscored by Erick Thohir, Indonesia’s Minister ⁢of ‍State-Owned ⁣Enterprises, who stated the country wants to “actively participate in various sports events⁢ in Southeast⁤ Asia, Asia and⁣ the world, so that Indonesian sports ‍can be an ambassador and⁢ a reflection of ⁣the nation’s greatness ⁢in ⁢the eyes ⁤of ⁤the world.”

The ⁢Indonesian Olympic Committee (IOC) has been invited⁤ to discussions with the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Though,the Indonesian IOC has indicated it will⁣ await ⁢the IOC’s official statement before ⁣proceeding. ⁢ The next two Summer Olympic Games are already scheduled: Los Angeles in 2028 and Brisbane, Australia, in 2032.

Past Hosting challenges and‍ Political Considerations

Indonesia’s pursuit of major sporting ⁤events has faced recent setbacks. The nation was stripped of ⁣hosting rights for both the ⁤2023‍ World Beach Games and the U-20 FIFA World Cup. Thes decisions stemmed from political unrest surrounding the potential participation of Israeli athletes. These⁤ events occurred before the outbreak of the current Israel-Hamas conflict.

Indonesia has a long-standing policy of excluding Israeli delegations from competitions held within its borders, a practice dating back to the 1962 asian Games when both Israel and Taiwan were ⁤excluded.
