IOP president Keith Burnett outlines a ‘pivotal’ year ahead for UK physics – Physics World

A Pivotal Year Ahead for British Physics

In his latest address, Institute of Physics (IOP) President Keith Burnett paints an optimistic yet challenging picture for the UK physics community. As the country transitions into its post-Brexit, post-pandemic phase, Burnett emphasizes the crucial role of physics in driving progress and resilience.

"This year is pivotal for UK physics," Burnett underscored. "We have navigated a global pandemic and decoupled from the EU. Now, we stand at a crossroads, opportunity knocking at our doors."

Burnett, also the vice-chancellor of the University of Sheffield, stressed the need for sustained investment in research and development. "A failure to support physics and physics-based industries," he warned, "could result in missed opportunities, delaying our recovery and hindering our ability to tackle looming challenges."

Among the promising developments, Burnett highlighted the government’s recent commitments to research and development, including a £20 billion increase in R&D spend over the next four years. He also欢迎ed the creation of new national agencies, such as UK Research and Innovation and the Science and Technology Facilities Council.

However, Burnett cautioned that these commitments must translate into tangible support for individual researchers, universities, and industries. "We must ensure that this investment reaches the grassroots," he said. "That it spurs innovation, and that it fosters a culture of collaboration and inclusivity."

Burnett also highlighted the need for a robust energy policy, one that leverages the UK’s strength in physics to unlock clean energy solutions. "With climate change bearing down upon us," he said, "we must harness our expertise in physics to decarbonize our economy and secure a sustainable future."

To navigate this pivotal year, Burnett called upon the physics community to work together, to communicate their work effectively, and to engage with policymakers and the wider public. "We have a story to tell, a story of hope, progress, and potential," he said. "Let us tell it with confidence, clarity, and conviction."

As the year unfolds, the physics community will be watching closely, eager to seize the opportunities that lie ahead.
