iOS 18.7.7 DarkSword Blocks, iCloud Sync Bugs, and Apple Anniversary Musings

Apple has expanded the availability of iOS 18.7.7 and iPadOS 18.7.7 to all compatible devices to protect users from the DarkSword exploit chain. This update allows users to secure their devices against a critical security threat without being required to upgrade to the newer iOS 26 software.

The DarkSword exploit is a full-chain kit that combines six different vulnerabilities located in the kernel, the dynamic loader, Safari, and WebKit. By stringing these vulnerabilities together, attackers can achieve full device compromise and mass data theft. The exploit can be triggered simply by loading a compromised website or a malicious advertisement within Safari, requiring no interaction from the user such as tapping a link in Messages or approving an installation prompt.

DarkSword Threat and Deployment

The exploit chain has been observed in active campaigns since at least November 2025, utilized by state-sponsored actors and commercial spyware vendors. The severity of the vulnerability became more acute after researchers published their findings and proof-of-concept code appeared on GitHub, potentially exposing hundreds of millions of devices.

Apple initially released iOS 18.7.7 on March 24, 2026, but limited the update to a small group of older devices, specifically the 7th-generation iPad and the iPhone XR, XS, and XS Max. Because newer devices had the option to move to iOS 26, they had stopped receiving point updates for iOS 18, leaving many users on vulnerable builds.

To address this, Apple widened the release of the security patch to all iPhones. This ensures that ordinary users can protect their photos, chats, and cryptocurrency wallets from the exploit without moving to a newer major operating system version.

iOS 26.4 CloudKit Issues

While the iOS 18.7.7 update addresses security concerns, some users on the newer iOS 26.4 are experiencing functional issues. A bug in CloudKit is currently disrupting real-time iCloud sync for certain apps and users.

According to reports, data is not being lost during these disruptions, but changes to data are either delayed or do not appear until the user switches applications. Apple is addressing this issue, and a fix is currently available in the iOS 26.5 beta.

Digital Key 2 and Ecosystem Updates

Outside of software updates, Apple’s Digital Key 2 technology is being integrated into automotive hardware. The technology allows users to lock, unlock, and start compatible vehicles, such as the Hyundai IONIQ 5, using an iPhone or Apple Watch, reducing the need for physical key fobs.

These technical developments coincide with the 50th anniversary of Apple, a milestone that has prompted reflection on the company’s evolution and the community that has formed around its products.
