Apple’s upcoming iOS 26 software update brings several improvements to the iPhone screenshot experience. The update, currently in beta and slated for a September release, focuses on enhanced control and functionality for capturing and interacting with screen images.
A new “Screen Capture” menu, located under “General” in the settings app, provides users with several new toggles. One key addition is the option for HDR screenshots. When enabled,screenshots of HDR photos and videos will display with full dynamic range on compatible iPhones and devices. Apple confirmed that HDR screenshots will be saved in the HEIF image format, while standard dynamic range (SDR) screenshots will continue to use the PNG format.
CarPlay screenshot behavior is also changing.Previously, taking a screenshot while connected to CarPlay would capture both the iPhone and CarPlay displays. With iOS 26, only the iPhone screenshot is captured by default. Users must manually enable CarPlay screenshot capture in the settings.
For iPhone 15 Pro and later models, iOS 26 integrates Visual Intelligence features directly into the screenshot interface. After taking a screenshot, users can access options at the bottom of the screen to “Ask” ChatGPT about the content, perform an ”Image Search” for similar images on platforms like Google Images, Etsy, and Pinterest, or use “Highlight to Search” to identify specific objects within the screenshot.
Users who prefer the older iOS 18 style of screenshot previews can disable full-screen previews in the new Screen Capture settings menu, reverting to thumbnails in the bottom-left corner of the screen.
