Apple’s software update cadence continued this week with the release of iOS 26.3, though the update itself is relatively minor. More significantly, the anticipated overhaul of Siri, powered by advancements in artificial intelligence, is facing further delays, potentially pushing its full arrival into next year. This comes as Apple prepares for potential hardware releases in the coming months, including updates to the iPhone, iPad, and MacBook lines.

iOS 26.3: Incremental Improvements and Security Focus

Released this week after nearly two months of beta testing, iOS 26.3 primarily focuses on security enhancements. While not a feature-rich update, it does include a few user-facing changes. Notably, the update introduces a new tool designed to simplify the process of transferring data from an iPhone to an Android device. Here’s a somewhat unusual move for Apple, signaling a potential acknowledgement of the reality that users do switch platforms. The update also brings minor changes to Weather wallpapers, offering some visual refinements to the user experience.

Siri’s AI Future Delayed Again

The more substantial news revolves around the continued setbacks for the next-generation Siri. Apple initially unveiled plans for a significantly improved Siri at WWDC 2024, promising a more personalized and intelligent assistant. However, the rollout has been repeatedly pushed back. Originally slated for iOS 26.4, the new Siri is now facing “snags” in testing, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. Internal betas suggest that many of the planned capabilities may now be deferred to iOS 26.5, or even iOS 27, which is expected to launch in September.

The core issue appears to be Apple’s difficulty in achieving the desired performance and accuracy with the new AI-powered Siri. Engineers are reportedly struggling to ensure the assistant can “properly process queries” and respond quickly enough to be genuinely useful. A key component of the update involves leveraging user data to provide more personalized responses, but Apple is proceeding cautiously, potentially offering users a toggle to enable this feature as part of a beta program within iOS 26.5. Another challenge lies in getting Siri’s “app intents” to function reliably – the ability for Siri to seamlessly execute multi-step actions within apps.

Hardware on the Horizon, but Supply Chain Concerns Emerge

While software updates dominate the headlines, Apple is also preparing for potential hardware releases. Reports indicate that shortages of iPhone 16e and iPad Air models are appearing in Apple retail stores, suggesting that new versions of these products are imminent. The iPhone 17e is also anticipated to launch soon, with potential improvements including support for MagSafe charging.

However, potential buyers considering a MacBook Pro purchase may want to hold off. While the entry-level MacBook Pro received an M5 chip update last October, the higher-end models with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips are expected shortly. However, these updates are expected to be incremental speed bumps rather than a major redesign. A more significant overhaul, including a new design and OLED displays with touchscreen capabilities, is rumored to be further out, potentially arriving later this year.

A Broader Product Pipeline

Beyond these specific products, Apple has a wider range of updates in the pipeline, with at least ten new products expected over the coming months. These include iterative updates to existing lines, as well as potentially some entirely new offerings. The delays with the revamped Siri may impact the timing of some of these releases, particularly those related to smart home technology and ecosystem integration.

iPhone Battery Life Improvements Anticipated

Looking further ahead, rumors suggest that the iPhone 18 Pro Max could see a significant boost in battery life. A potential increase in battery capacity to between 5,100 and 5,200 mAh is being discussed, alongside improvements to camera technology, including a variable aperture on the main camera and a wider fixed aperture on the telephoto lens. Apple is reportedly aiming to maintain current pricing despite rising component costs.
