Apple Music is poised to receive a significant user interface overhaul and a boost in functionality with the latest iOS 26.4 beta. The update, currently available to developers, introduces dynamic album backgrounds, a concert discovery feature, and, most notably, an AI-powered playlist generator dubbed “Playlist Playground.”

Updated Interface for Albums and Playlists

The visual refresh within Apple Music focuses on creating a more immersive experience. Following a major redesign introduced with iOS 26 last year, the app is now implementing dynamic backgrounds for albums and playlists. Instead of a static white backdrop, the background color will adapt to the dominant hues of the album artwork, offering a more fluid and visually engaging presentation. While not a radical change, this subtle tweak aims to enhance the overall aesthetic appeal of the music library.

Concerts Near You

Apple is also integrating a concert discovery feature directly into Apple Music. The update will display upcoming concerts near the user, leveraging functionality similar to that already found in Apple’s Shazam app. Users will be able to view performance details and access ticket information, streamlining the process of finding and attending live music events. This integration suggests Apple is aiming to become a more comprehensive music platform, extending beyond streaming to encompass the live music experience.

AI-Generated Playlists with Playlist Playground

The most substantial addition in iOS 26.4 beta is “Playlist Playground,” an AI-powered feature designed to simplify playlist creation. Currently labeled as a “beta,” the feature allows users to generate playlists based on text prompts or by selecting a minimum of ten songs. This opens up possibilities for creating playlists tailored to specific moods, activities, or artists, simply by describing the desired vibe to Apple Music.

Users can input text descriptions like “upbeat songs for a road trip” or “chill electronic music for studying,” and the AI will curate a playlist accordingly. Alternatively, users can provide a starting point by selecting a handful of songs and the AI will expand upon that selection, generating a playlist with similar tracks. The system also appears to support iterative refinement, allowing users to further refine generated playlists with additional prompts without starting from scratch.

The underlying technology powering Playlist Playground remains somewhat unclear. While the feature leverages Apple Intelligence, it’s uncertain whether it relies solely on Apple’s own AI models or incorporates third-party providers. Apple has previously partnered with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into its services, and it’s possible that similar collaborations are at play here. The beta code suggests the feature is capable of editing existing playlists as well, offering a more versatile playlist management experience.

Access to Playlist Playground within the iOS 26.4 beta is not immediately available to all users upon installation. Apple is likely employing a phased rollout, gradually enabling the feature as the underlying Apple Intelligence models are downloaded and configured. Users can check the status of the download in the Settings app under the “Apple Intelligence & Siri” menu.

Beyond Playlists and Concerts

The iOS 26.4 beta includes other enhancements, such as encrypted RCS messaging and video episodes on Apple Podcasts. These additions demonstrate Apple’s continued commitment to improving its ecosystem of services and providing users with a more comprehensive and secure digital experience.

When to Expect iOS 26.4

Apple has indicated that the public release of iOS 26.4 is expected this spring. While a specific date has not been announced, developers can continue to test and provide feedback on the beta version, helping to refine the features and ensure a smooth rollout to the wider user base. The arrival of iOS 26.4 promises to be a notable update for Apple Music subscribers, offering a blend of aesthetic improvements and intelligent new features designed to enhance music discovery and enjoyment.
