Apple released the first developer beta of iOS 26.5 on March 30, 2026. The update, which carries build number 23F5043g, focuses on incremental improvements and the introduction of specific functional changes to Apple Maps and messaging security.
Alongside the iPhone update, Apple launched corresponding developer betas for iPadOS 26.5, macOS 26.5, visionOS 26.5 and watchOS 26.5. A public beta for these versions was expected to be available between March 30 and April 5, 2026.
Apple Maps: Suggested Places and Ad Framework
A primary addition in iOS 26.5 is the Suggested Places feature within Apple Maps. This tool provides recommendations to users based on recent searches and trending locations nearby. The feature is accessed by tapping inside the search box of the application.
The update also establishes the technical foundation for the introduction of advertisements within Apple Maps, which the company announced would arrive in the summer of 2026. These ads will be integrated into search results and the Suggested Places section.
According to code analyzed in the beta, Maps may show local ads based on your approximate location, current search terms, or view of the map while you search.
Apple has stated that these advertisements will be clearly identified with an ad label.
RCS Messaging and Security Updates
iOS 26.5 re-introduces end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for RCS messages. This security feature allows conversations between iPhone and Android users to be encrypted, preventing third parties from intercepting or reading the messages.
Apple had previously tested E2EE for RCS during the iOS 26.4 beta cycle, but the feature was not included in the final public release of that version. In iOS 26.5, the feature is enabled by default, and users can manage it via a toggle in the Messages section of the Settings app.
European Union Interoperability and Wearables
To comply with the requirements of the Digital Markets Act in the European Union, iOS 26.5 includes new interoperability features for third-party wearables. These changes are designed to simplify how non-Apple accessories connect with iOS devices.
One significant addition is proximity pairing. This allows third-party earbuds and similar accessories to initiate a one-tap pairing process by bringing the device close to an iPhone or iPad, mirroring the existing pairing experience for AirPods. This removes the need for the multi-step pairing processes previously required for third-party hardware.
The beta also introduces a new Live Activity sharing feature as part of these EU-specific compliance updates.
System Refinements and Siri Status
Users will find improved search functionality within the Settings app in iOS 26.5. This update aims to increase search accuracy and responsiveness, making it more efficient for users to locate specific configurations and options.
Despite anticipation for new AI capabilities, iOS 26.5 does not include any updates to Siri or Apple Intelligence. Reporting indicates that Apple may be reserving significant Siri improvements for the release of iOS 27, which is expected later in 2026.
