Apple released iOS 26.5 and iPadOS 26.5 on May 11, 2026, introducing end-to-end encryption for the Rich Communication Services (RCS) messaging standard. This update enables secure communication between iPhone and Android users, bringing the privacy protections of RCS closer to those found in iMessage.
The implementation of end-to-end encryption for RCS is currently labeled as a beta feature. According to reporting from Frandroid and alloforfait.fr, the functionality is limited to a subset of supported cellular carriers, and expanded availability is expected to roll out over time.
For the encryption to function, both the sender and the recipient must use a cellular carrier that supports the feature. Users can verify the security status of their conversations through a visual indicator in the Messages app; encrypted RCS chats display a small padlock icon. If this icon is absent, the message is not encrypted, even if the devices are using the RCS protocol.
Updates to Apple Maps and Visuals
Beyond messaging improvements, iOS 26.5 introduces new functionality to the Maps app. A new Suggested Places
section now displays recommendations to users based on their recent searches and trending locations nearby.
The update also includes the technical groundwork required to support advertisements within the Maps app. These ads are scheduled to begin appearing this summer.
On the aesthetic side, Apple added a new Pride Luminance wallpaper. This wallpaper is designed to dynamically refract a spectrum of colors and is intended to match the Pride Luminance Apple Watch band and watch face.
Broad Ecosystem Deployment
The May 11, 2026, release extends across Apple’s entire software ecosystem. In addition to iOS and iPadOS, the company released version 26.5 of macOS, watchOS, tvOS, visionOS, and HomePod software.

As noted by MacGeneration, the macOS 26.5 update arrives as a final version without significant new feature additions, focusing primarily on stability and patches.
Apple also provided security and stability updates for older hardware that cannot run the current major operating system. These include:
- iOS 15.8.8
- iOS 16.7.16
- iOS 18.7.9
- iPadOS 17.7.11
These updates can be installed on eligible devices via the Software Update section in the general settings menu.
These releases are expected to be the final major updates for the current operating system versions before Apple unveils the next generation of software at its Worldwide Developers Conference next month.
