iOS 27: Features, Battery Life & Siri Improvements – Latest News

by Lisa Park - Tech Editor

Apple’s iOS 27, slated for release this fall, appears to be taking a different tack than its predecessor, iOS 26. While iOS 26 introduced the visually revamped “Liquid Glass” design, it also brought with it performance issues, particularly on older iPhone models. Reports indicate that iOS 27 will prioritize stability, performance improvements, and battery life optimization over sweeping visual changes.

A Return to Optimization

This shift in focus echoes Apple’s approach with Mac OS X Snow Leopard in 2009, a release that prioritized speed, stability, and optimization over introducing a host of new features. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple will be “cleaning up the operating system, removing scraps of old code, rewriting features and subtly upgrading apps to let them perform better.” This under-the-hood overhaul aims to make the operating system feel more responsive and efficient.

The need for this cleanup is underscored by the experience with iOS 26. The Liquid Glass design, while aesthetically notable, demonstrably impacted performance. IOS 27 seems designed to address these shortcomings, potentially including user interface tweaks specifically aimed at mitigating the issues introduced last year.

Battery Life Improvements on the Horizon

One of the key areas of improvement targeted by iOS 27 is battery life. Multiple sources point to code cleanup and interface adjustments as contributing factors to increased efficiency. Apple last made a significant push for battery optimization with iOS 12, released in 2018, and iOS 27 represents a renewed effort in this area. The focus on foundational improvements suggests a desire to address systemic inefficiencies rather than relying on incremental gains.

AI Integration and a Conversational Siri

Beyond performance enhancements, iOS 27 is expected to deepen Apple’s integration of artificial intelligence. This includes a more conversational, chatbot-style Siri, bringing it closer in functionality to competitors like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. The development of this Siri chatbot has reportedly been underway for some time, and iOS 27 is expected to be the platform for its full rollout.

Apple is also integrating new Apple Intelligence features, powered in part by Google’s Gemini. Rumors suggest these capabilities will initially appear in applications like Calendar. Previous plans for a comprehensive Apple Health+ subscription service offering AI-powered health and fitness recommendations have reportedly been revised, with only select features potentially making their way into iOS 27.

New Connectivity Features

iOS 27 may also introduce support for 5G satellite internet connectivity, though this feature could initially be limited to the iPhone 18 Pro models equipped with Apple’s next-generation C2 modem. Additional satellite features are also rumored, including Apple Maps functionality via satellite and the ability to send and receive messages, including photos, when a cellular or Wi-Fi connection is unavailable.

Liquid Glass Design to Remain

Despite the performance concerns associated with its introduction, the Liquid Glass design language introduced in iOS 26 is expected to remain in iOS 27. Reports indicate Apple is not planning a major visual overhaul, instead focusing on refining and optimizing the existing interface.

Beta Testing and Release Timeline

The first beta of iOS 27 is anticipated to be released during Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June . The final version of the update is expected to be released to the public in September , coinciding with the launch of new iPhone models. This timeline allows for several months of testing and refinement based on feedback from developers and early adopters.

iOS 27 represents a strategic shift for Apple, prioritizing a stable and efficient user experience over flashy new features. This approach acknowledges the shortcomings of iOS 26 and aims to deliver a more polished and reliable operating system. The combination of performance improvements, AI integration, and new connectivity features positions iOS 27 as a significant update for iPhone users.
