Apple is expected to introduce iOS 27 during its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) keynote on June 8, 2026. The update is rumored to prioritize system stability and performance, while introducing a dedicated application for Apple’s virtual assistant and expanding satellite connectivity capabilities.
Following the keynote, Apple typically releases the first developer beta immediately, with a public beta generally arriving in July. The final version of iOS 27 is expected to launch for compatible iPhones in September 2026.
A Dedicated Siri Application
Reports from Bloomberg and The Information indicate that Apple plans to debut a dedicated Siri app across iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27. This application would introduce an Extensions
feature, allowing users to interact with the assistant using both voice and text modes.
The proposed app would function similarly to AI chatbots such as Claude, Gemini, and ChatGPT, providing users with a searchable history of their past conversations with the assistant.
The interface for Siri is also expected to change, with rumors suggesting a new integration within the Dynamic Island. When triggered, the Dynamic Island would reportedly display a Search or Ask
prompt accompanied by a glowing cursor
.
iOS 27 is expected to deliver personalized Siri features that were delayed in 2024. These capabilities would allow the assistant to retrieve specific personal information from the Messages and Mail apps, such as flight details or lunch reservations.
“We look forward to bringing a more personalized Siri to users coming this year,”
Tim Cook, Apple CEO
Expanded Satellite Connectivity
iOS 27 is rumored to support 5G satellite internet connectivity. However, this specific functionality may be restricted to the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and a new iPhone Ultra model, all of which would utilize Apple’s next-generation C2 modem.
Beyond high-speed connectivity, four additional satellite-based features are rumored for the update:
- Apple Maps functionality via satellite
- Support for sending photos through Messages via satellite
- Integration of satellite features for third-party apps available in the App Store
- The ability to connect to a satellite without requiring the user to point the device toward the sky
These developments follow a recent announcement by Amazon regarding its plans to acquire Globalstar, the company that currently powers satellite features for the Apple Watch Ultra 3 and iPhone 14 and newer. Amazon has reportedly signed an agreement with Apple to provide satellite connectivity for both current and future hardware features.
Current satellite services provided by Apple include Emergency SOS, Find My, Roadside Assistance, and Messages, all of which remain free in supported regions without cellular or Wi-Fi access.
Performance and Design Philosophy
Industry reports suggest that Apple is adopting a philosophy similar to the Mac OS X Snow Leopard release, focusing heavily on quality and underlying performance
rather than radical visual overhauls.
The development focus for iOS 27 is expected to center on bug fixes, improved system stability, and enhancements to the Liquid Glass design. While major design changes are not expected, a system-wide Liquid Glass slider may be added to allow users to precisely adjust the opacity of the interface.
Apple Intelligence and Tooling
Code discovered on Apple’s servers by Nicolás Alvarez suggests four new Apple Intelligence features for the iPhone 15 Pro and newer models:
- Visual Intelligence for scanning nutrition labels to track calories and macronutrients in the Health app
- Visual Intelligence for scanning printed phone numbers and addresses to add them to the Contacts app
- The ability to scan physical gym cards or event tickets in the Wallet app to create digital versions
- Automatic naming of Tab Groups in Safari based on the content of the tabs
Further updates may include three new photo editing tools powered by Apple Intelligence within the Photos app. Apple is reportedly testing an updated keyboard with enhanced autocorrect that offers alternative word suggestions, similar to the functionality found in Grammarly.
Small quality-of-life improvements are also expected, including the addition of Undo
and Redo
options within the Home Screen customization menu.
Device Compatibility
According to Instant Digital, a leaker on the Weibo platform, iOS 27 will be compatible with the iPhone 12 series and newer. This would mean Apple is dropping support for several older models.
The devices expected to lose support for iOS 27 include the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max, and the second-generation iPhone SE. These devices are expected to continue receiving security updates via iOS 26 for several years.
Compatible models are expected to include the iPhone 12 through iPhone 17 series, including the iPhone 17e, iPhone Air, and the third-generation iPhone SE. Any new Apple Intelligence features introduced in iOS 27 will require an iPhone 15 Pro or a newer device.
