University of Iowa Fraternity Suspended Following Hazing Incident
IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa has suspended the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity until following a hazing incident that occurred in November 2024, according to reports from KCRG and other news outlets.
Police body camera footage released this week shows the scene officers encountered when responding to a fire alarm at the fraternity house located at 703 N. Dubuque St. The footage depicts a basement room crowded with shirtless men, some covered in ketchup and alcohol, and others wearing blindfolds.
“You gotta see it from my perspective, what the f— did I just walk into?” one officer is heard saying in the footage, as reported by KCRG.
Officers reportedly found 56 pledges in two dark rooms during the incident. Another officer stated, “Looks like we have quite a bit of hazing,” according to KCRG.
The body camera footage shows officers attempting to ascertain what was happening and asking if anyone required medical attention or was present against their will. Pledges responded collectively, stating that no one was there unwillingly.
Officers searched the fraternity house for someone in charge, but reportedly, no one directed them to a responsible party. During the incident, one individual allegedly shouted slurs at officers and repeatedly interrupted conversations between police, and pledges.
“You got f—— nothing, there’s no fire here, no nothing,” the individual reportedly said, according to KCRG.
That individual was arrested and initially charged with interference with official acts, but those charges were later dropped.
The University of Iowa’s Office of Student Accountability ordered Alpha Delta Phi to suspend all operations pending an investigation into the allegations. The fraternity’s national organization also placed the chapter under suspension, according to reporting from Fox News.
The suspension of Alpha Delta Phi brings the total number of fraternities currently under suspension at the University of Iowa to three. The incident at the University of Iowa is part of a broader pattern of investigations into fraternity and sorority conduct at Iowa universities, as noted by The Gazette. A similar investigation is underway at Iowa State University.
The release of the body camera footage follows a viral YouTube video highlighting the alleged hazing incident, as reported by startpage and The Gazette. The footage shows the chaotic scene encountered by first responders.
