The Iowa History Alliance recently honored outstanding contributions to the state’s rich past at its annual Excellence in History Awards ceremony, held in Des Moines.The event recognized individuals and projects for their dedication to preserving, interpreting, and sharing Iowa’s heritage.
Kenneth Quinn Honored with Prestigious Petersen/Harlan Award
Former U.S. Ambassador to Cambodia and past leader of the World Food Prize Foundation,Kenneth Quinn,was presented with the William J.Petersen/Edgar R. Harlan Award. This esteemed award celebrates long-term or ongoing significant contributions to Iowa history, acknowledging Quinn’s deep and lasting impact on the state’s ancient narrative.
Recognizing Excellence Across Multiple Categories
The ceremony celebrated a diverse range of achievements in Iowa history, with awards presented in several key categories:
benjamin F. Shambaugh Award
Dr.eric steven Zimmer received the Benjamin F. Shambaugh Award for authoring the most significant book on Iowa history. his work, “Red Earth Nation,” was lauded for its in-depth exploration and contribution to the understanding of Iowa’s past.
Excellence in archaeology and Historic Preservation Award
Tom Richards was recognized with the Excellence in Archaeology and Historic Preservation Award for his exemplary work on the Nevada journal Building. This award highlights outstanding archaeology or preservation projects completed within the past year, underscoring the importance of safeguarding historical structures.
George Mills & Louise Noun Popular History Award
Cassandra Jensen earned the George mills & Louise Noun Popular History Award for her compelling article on an Iowa topic, published in Iowa Magazine. This award celebrates the best popular history writing that makes historical subjects accessible and engaging for a broader audience.
Loren Horton Community History Award
Mike Day was honored with the Loren horton Community History Award for his impactful projects that significantly increased public awareness of local history. His features in the Dubuque Telegraph-Herald were specifically recognized for bringing community stories to the forefront.
Mildred Throne/Charles Aldrich Award
Emily Bronswick received the Mildred Throne/Charles Aldrich Award for her significant article published in a professional history journal.Her work, focusing on Black Iowa women’s activism and featured in the annals of Iowa, was celebrated for its scholarly rigor and contribution to historical discourse.
