Thirty-three Iowa schools and districts will receive grants to participate in the Choose Iowa Food Purchasing Program for Schools,according to Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig. This one-year pilot program aims to strengthen connections between Iowa schools and Choose Iowa members, encouraging school food programs to increase their purchases of ingredients and products from local farmers and small businesses. The Choose Iowa initiative promotes local food.
The pilot program has a $70,000 budget. Individual schools could apply for up to $1,000 per building. Participating schools must provide a matching financial contribution to spend on local foods. This initiative supports local farmers and businesses.
