IPad Air New Feature Rumors
Opinion: It’s time for Face ID to Grace the iPad Air
For years, the iPad Air has felt like a product stuck in neutral. Since its redesign in 2020, each iteration has brought incremental improvements – a faster chip here, a slightly better camera there. But the next refresh presents Apple with a golden opportunity to inject some real excitement into the lineup: face ID.The iPad Pro’s Exclusive Feature
It’s frankly baffling that in 2025, Face ID remains an iPad Pro exclusive. This technology, now eight years old, is standard fare on iPhones, even the budget-kind models.why has Apple been so hesitant to expand its availability to the iPad Air?
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman recently reported that Apple plans to unveil a new iPad air model next spring, alongside a new budget iPad, iPhone 17e, and a new Studio Display. This new iPad Air is expected to boast the powerful M4 chip. While a faster processor is always welcome,it’s not enough to truly differentiate the Air. Face ID, however, would be a game-changer.
Why Now is the Right Time
Historically, the biggest obstacle to bringing Face ID to the iPad Air was its proximity to the iPad Pro. Before the Pro’s OLED redesign, the price difference was a mere $200. The Pro’s key advantages were its 120Hz display, faster silicon, and, of course, Face ID. Introducing Face ID to the Air would have significantly diminished the Pro’s appeal.
But the landscape has changed. The iPad Pro now commands a $400 premium over the Air, justified by its stunning OLED display, incredibly thin design, compatibility with a more advanced Magic Keyboard, and the option for a nano-texture display.Face ID, while still a valuable feature, no longer carries the same weight in the Pro’s value proposition.
A Boost for the iPad Air
Adding Face ID to the iPad Air would provide a compelling reason for consumers to choose it over the base model iPad,which starts at $349. It would also revitalize the Air lineup, which has felt stagnant for far too long. Crucially, it wouldn’t cannibalize iPad Pro sales, as the Pro now offers a significantly more premium experience.
In short, the time is ripe for Apple to bring Face ID to the iPad Air. It’s a feature that would enhance the user experience, differentiate the Air from the base model, and inject some much-needed excitement into the lineup.
