apple’s iPadOS 26 introduces a revamped windowing system, designed to enhance the multitasking experience across a broader spectrum of devices. This update focuses on making more features accessible, even with older hardware, according to Apple’s Craig Federighi. The goal is to meet the high demand for improved window management capabilities.
Federighi noted that Apple has implemented numerous optimizations and re-architected the windowing system and background task management. These changes allow the system to extract more performance from devices that previously struggled with Stage Manager. While limitations remain on the number of active, up-to-date windows, the enhancements represent a significant step forward.
Stage Manager remains an option in iPadOS 26, but it’s now a user-selectable multitasking mode rather then the default. Users can also opt to disable both new multitasking systems, retaining the traditional iPad interface.

Despite these advancements, Apple continues to differentiate the iPad from its Mac line. while iPadOS 26 brings the iPad closer to the Mac in terms of user interface, certain Mac functionalities will remain exclusive to those devices.
We decided this time: make everything we can make available, even if it has some nuances on older hardware, as we saw so much demand [for Stage manager].
What’s next
The release of iPadOS 26 promises a more versatile and efficient multitasking experience for iPad users, especially those with older devices. The ability to choose between different multitasking modes ensures that users can tailor their experience to their preferences and hardware capabilities.
