iPadOS 26: Always Show Dock for Mac-Like Multitasking

iPadOS 26 introduces a significant overhaul to multitasking, moving towards a more desktop-like experience. While the new windowing system and menu bar are substantial changes, a seemingly small setting – the ability to automatically show and hide the Dock – is proving to be a key element in making the new system feel truly intuitive, particularly for users familiar with macOS.

A Mac-Like Experience on iPad

The core of the iPadOS 26 multitasking update is a new app windowing system. Users can now freely resize and overlap windows, a capability previously limited through Stage Manager. This represents a departure from the traditionally full-screen or slide-over app approach on iPad, bringing it closer to the flexibility of macOS window management. The addition of a menu bar further solidifies this Mac-inspired direction.

However, the transition isn’t simply about replicating macOS features. Apple has adapted the experience for the iPad’s unique form factor and touch-based interaction. How the Dock Setting Works

On macOS, the Dock is typically always visible unless the user explicitly chooses to hide it, or when an application is in full-screen mode. IPadOS 26 mirrors this behavior, but with a key difference. Previously, the Dock was primarily accessible from the Home Screen and required a gesture to invoke while within apps. Enabling ‘Automatically Show & Hide Dock’ changes this, keeping the Dock consistently visible while working in applications, as long as the app’s window doesn’t overlap its space on the screen.

There are two primary conditions for the Dock to remain visible: the app window cannot be in full-screen, and it must not extend into the area occupied by the Dock at the bottom of the display. Meeting these criteria ensures the Dock remains accessible for quick app switching.
