iOS 26 to⁤ Expand Audio Mix Feature to Third-Party Apps

‌ Updated June 22, 2025

Apple’s iOS 26 will allow third-party applications to utilize ⁣the Audio mix feature, currently exclusive to the iPhone 16 and newer models. ‌This enhancement provides developers access to machine learning-driven audio editing tools.

The Audio Mix feature, already‌ available in the iPhone 16’s Photos app, enables users to refine video sound after recording. Such as, background noise can be reduced to‌ clarify a speaker’s voice. With iOS 26, this capability extends to other apps, offering a ⁢consistent audio editing experience across the platform.

Audio Mix ⁣offers four primary options:

  • Standard: Plays the original ⁣recorded audio.
  • In-frame: Reduces sounds⁤ from sources outside the video frame.
  • studio:‍ Minimizes background noise and reverb for a studio-like sound.
  • Cinematic: Places voices on a front-facing⁣ track while preserving environmental noises in surround sound.

The audio mix feature requires videos recorded with spatial ⁤audio. On iPhone 16 models, Spatial Audio is enabled by default during‌ video⁤ recording.Users can ⁤adjust this setting in the Settings app ⁢under Camera →⁢ Record Sound. ⁣Apple is also bringing Audio Mix controls⁢ to Mac apps with macOS Tahoe, ‌expanding ‍the feature’s availability.

In addition to Audio Mix, Apple announced ⁢that audio-only apps,‌ such as Voice Memos,‌ can now save audio in the QuickTime audio format (QTA). “Similar⁢ to QuickTime movies or MPEG‌ files, ⁣the QTA format supports multiple audio tracks with alternate track groups, ‍just ⁣like how Spatial Audio⁤ files are composed,” Apple said ⁣during a WWDC 2025 session.

What’s next

Developers can soon integrate advanced audio editing features into their apps, providing users with⁤ more control over their video sound. The expanded spatial‍ audio support and new audio editing options promise a richer multimedia experience⁤ on Apple⁢ devices.
