Every year,tech reviewer Marques Brownlee,better known as MKBHD,unveils his highly anticipated Smartphone Awards,recognizing the best devices across various categories.This year’s awards saw a surprising winner: the iPhone 16, claiming the title of Best Small Phone.
The definition of a “small phone” has evolved significantly in recent years, with many manufacturers abandoning compact designs. Apple itself discontinued its mini-sized iPhone in 2022,opting for the larger iPhone 14 Plus. Despite this trend, MKBHD chose the iPhone 16, with its 6.1-inch display, as the standout small phone of 2024.
“It’s the ideal phone for people who want a powerful phone without a huge screen,” Brownlee noted, praising Apple’s decision to pack many features from the Pro lineup into the base model while maintaining a relatively compact and lightweight design.

The iPhone 16 Pro also secured a win, taking home the Best Camera award. While acknowledging the existence of phones with more advanced sensors, Brownlee emphasized the iPhone’s overall package, especially its prowess in professional video recording.
Though, the coveted Phone of the Year title went to Samsung’s Galaxy S24 Ultra. Brownlee described the S24 Ultra as “boring” due to its lack of groundbreaking features like a foldable design. Nevertheless, he lauded its “great screen, great battery, great cameras,” and a new anti-reflective coating that impressed him.”The S24 Ultra was the phone I used the most during the year,” Brownlee admitted.
