Launch Day Buzz in Beijing
On Friday, hundreds of customers gathered at Apple’s flagship store in Beijing’s Sanlitun district to collect pre-ordered iPhone 17s, indicating initial demand is robust in China, the world’s second-largest economy (Reuters). The launch follows Apple’s continued efforts to maintain its market share in a competitive landscape dominated by domestic brands like Huawei, Xiaomi, adn Oppo.
Customer Sentiment and Model Preferences
Shuke Wang, 35, was among the approximately 300 customers who collected their phones at the Sanlitun store. He purchased the iPhone 17 Pro Max, wich starts at 9,999 yuan (approximately $1,406 USD as of September 19, 2024) in China (Reuters). Analysts predict the Pro Max will be the best-selling model in the iPhone 17 series.
Wang expressed appreciation for the redesigned aesthetics, especially the new orange color option. Though, this positive sentiment is not universally shared, as concerns regarding trade-offs made in the design process are emerging.
Analyst concerns: Slim Design vs.Key Features
According to Ming-Chi Kuo, a respected Apple analyst, the iPhone 17’s focus on a slimmer design has come at the expense of features highly valued by Chinese consumers. Specifically, Kuo notes that Apple compromised on battery life, camera quality, and audio quality to achieve the sleeker form factor (MacRumors). These features are frequently enough cited as primary considerations for smartphone purchases in China.
This trade-off could limit the iPhone 17’s ability to deliver a meaningful sales boost in the region, despite the initial launch day enthusiasm. Chinese consumers often prioritize practical functionality and performance over purely aesthetic improvements.
