iPhone 17 Lineup: Processor and RAM Speculations Emerge
Updated May 31, 2025
Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17 series may bring some unexpected changes, according too GF securities analyst Jeff Pu. A recent investor note suggests a potential shift in processor strategy for the iPhone 17 lineup. Initial expectations pointed to the A19 chip powering all models, but Pu now believes the base iPhone 17 will rather utilize the A18 chip, the same one expected in the iPhone 16.
The iPhone 17’s RAM configuration is also subject to change. Pu previously stated the iPhone 17 and 17 air would have 8GB of RAM, while the Pro models would boast 12GB. Now, he anticipates the iPhone 17 to have 8GB, while the iPhone 17 Air will match the Pro models with 12GB of RAM.
In addition, Pu’s note indicates that all four iPhone 17 models could incorporate a new metalens technology for the proximity sensor. This “metalens” technology could significantly reduce the size of the Face ID sensor, potentially leading to a smaller Dynamic Island across the entire iPhone 17 range. This contradicts earlier reports from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who suggested the Dynamic Island would remain largely unchanged from the iPhone 16.
