Apple is poised to unveil a new entry-level iPhone, the 17e, at an event scheduled for . This launch will follow the introduction of the iPhone 16e in February 2025, marking a continued effort by Apple to offer a more affordable iPhone option.
Design
The iPhone 17e is expected to maintain a similar design aesthetic to its predecessor, the iPhone 16e. This includes the same 6.1-inch display size and a single-lens rear camera setup. Color options will likely remain limited to black and white.
Display
While Apple introduced ProMotion technology – offering a 120Hz refresh rate for smoother visuals – to its standard iPhone 17 lineup in 2025, the iPhone 17e will reportedly stick with a 60Hz refresh rate. Which means users won’t experience the same level of responsiveness and fluidity when scrolling or watching videos compared to the higher-end models. The iPhone 17e will remain the only new iPhone release without 120Hz support.
The iPhone 16e also lacked always-on display functionality and this is unlikely to change with the iPhone 17e. Achieving always-on display requires an OLED panel capable of a 1-nit minimum brightness, a feature currently reserved for Apple’s more expensive iPhone models. Brightness and HDR performance will also likely remain below that of the flagship iPhones.
Dynamic Island
A potential upgrade for the iPhone 17e is the inclusion of the Dynamic Island, replacing the traditional notch seen on the iPhone 16e. The Dynamic Island, first introduced on the iPhone 14 Pro, is a pill-shaped cutout that houses the TrueDepth camera system and front-facing camera. It dynamically adapts to show alerts, notifications, and activities, offering a more integrated user experience. However, reports are conflicting, with some sources suggesting Apple may retain the notch to keep costs down.
A19 Chip
Powering the iPhone 17e will be Apple’s A19 chip, the same processor found in the standard iPhone 17 models. The A19 is built on an upgraded N3P 3-nanometer process, promising a 5 to 10 percent performance boost over the A18 chip used in the iPhone 16e.
Apple may opt for a downclocked version of the A19 in the iPhone 17e to further manage costs. Similar to the iPhone 16e, which featured a 4-core GPU instead of the 5-core GPU in the standard iPhone 16, the iPhone 17e could see a reduction in GPU core count. Despite any potential downgrades, the A19 chip will still offer improvements to the CPU, GPU, display engine, image signal processor, and Neural Engine, enhancing AI performance. Each GPU core will feature a Neural Accelerator to boost the performance of local AI models.
The iPhone 17e is expected to continue with 8GB of RAM, while other iPhone 17 models have 12GB.
MagSafe Compatibility
A significant improvement expected in the iPhone 17e is the addition of MagSafe compatibility. The iPhone 16e lacked the magnetic ring required for MagSafe charging and accessories, limiting users to 7.5W wireless charging speeds. The inclusion of MagSafe in the iPhone 17e would allow for faster 15W (or potentially higher) wireless charging and compatibility with a wide range of MagSafe cases and accessories.
Camera
The iPhone 17e is anticipated to feature a single 48-megapixel Wide Angle camera on the rear, without any reported upgrades to the camera system. The iPhone 16e also lacked a dedicated Camera Control button, and this is not expected to change with the iPhone 17e.
While the standard iPhone 17 models received an upgraded 18-megapixel Center Stage front-facing camera, the iPhone 17e is likely to retain the 12-megapixel front-facing camera from the iPhone 16e.
Modem
The iPhone 17e will adopt Apple’s C1X modem, which debuted in the iPhone Air. This modem is designed to be faster and more energy-efficient than the C1 modem used in the iPhone 16e. Apple claims the C1X modem offers up to two times faster speeds and improved power efficiency compared to Qualcomm modems.
N1 Chip
Recent reports suggest Apple may include its N1 chip in the iPhone 17e, bringing improvements to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth performance, as well as adding Thread support. However, initial indications suggested the N1 chip would be excluded to reduce costs, so its inclusion remains uncertain.
