iPhone 18 Pro: Variable Aperture & Upgraded Telephoto Camera Leaks

by Lisa Park - Tech Editor

Apple’s forthcoming iPhone 18 series is shaping up to represent a significant shift in the company’s high-end smartphone lineup, with rumors pointing to substantial camera upgrades for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. While the standard iPhone 18 may not arrive until 2027, the Pro models are expected to launch in September, and are currently the focus of intense development and testing.

According to leaks, Apple is actively testing two major rear camera improvements for the next generation of iPhones, potentially marking a turning point in the iPhone’s photographic capabilities.

Variable Aperture Under Testing for iPhone 18 Pro

A post on the Weibo platform by the well-known leaker Digital Chat Station indicates that Apple is evaluating a new main camera for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, featuring a variable aperture. This technology allows the camera to physically adjust the size of the lens opening, controlling the amount of light that reaches the image sensor.

Theoretically, a variable aperture provides greater flexibility in adjusting exposure and depth of field, ultimately improving image quality across a wider range of lighting conditions. In low-light scenarios, the aperture can widen to capture more light and reduce noise. Conversely, in bright conditions, it can narrow to prevent overexposure. This also offers users more creative control over the aesthetic qualities of their images, particularly the degree of background blur.

If these reports are accurate, the iPhone 18 Pro models would be the first iPhones to incorporate this advanced camera technology.

A Technology Previously Explored by Android Manufacturers

Variable aperture isn’t entirely new to the smartphone market. Several Android manufacturers have experimented with the technology in the past. Samsung notably introduced it with the Galaxy S9 in 2018. However, the company discontinued its use in subsequent generations, citing space constraints within the phone’s chassis and the high manufacturing costs associated with the complex mechanism.

Telephoto Camera Upgrade Also in the Works for iPhone 18 Pro

In addition to the variable aperture lens, leaks suggest that the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will also receive an upgraded telephoto camera. The new telephoto unit is expected to feature a larger aperture, which could contribute to:

  • Improved background separation
  • Increased light intake by the sensor
  • Reduced noise in images, particularly in low-light conditions

Comparison with iPhone 17 Pro Cameras

For context, the iPhone 17 Pro features a 48-megapixel telephoto camera with a fixed aperture of f/2.8. While Apple made notable improvements to the cameras compared to the iPhone 16 Pro series, it maintained the same aperture. These new leaks suggest Apple may be prepared to overcome this limitation in the next generation.

The benefits of a larger aperture in a telephoto lens are particularly significant. A wider aperture allows more light to reach the sensor when zoomed in, which is crucial for maintaining image quality and minimizing noise. Zooming inherently reduces the amount of light captured, so a larger aperture helps to compensate for this effect.

The move towards variable aperture and larger apertures in telephoto lenses signals a potential shift in Apple’s camera strategy. While software processing has played an increasingly important role in smartphone photography, these hardware upgrades suggest a renewed focus on optical performance. This could lead to more natural-looking images with improved dynamic range and detail, particularly in challenging lighting conditions. The challenge for Apple will be to implement these features without significantly increasing the size or cost of the iPhone 18 Pro models, issues that previously led Samsung to abandon variable aperture technology.

The potential for improved low-light performance and greater creative control over depth of field are likely to be key selling points for the iPhone 18 Pro, appealing to both casual users and photography enthusiasts.
