Import Approval Process Underway
The Indonesian Ministry of Trade (Kementerian Perdagangan) is prepared to process import approval (PI) for AppleS forthcoming iPhone 17, according to Trade Minister Budi santoso. Santoso stated on Friday, September 6, 2024, that the Ministry will expedite the process if Apple meets all necessary requirements.He emphasized that these requirements apply to all imported goods, not just Apple products.
Specifically, import approval necessitates a recommendation from the relevant technical ministry. “The principle is any import… requires recommendations from the technical ministry provided that the requirements have been completed,enter,yes we process,” Santoso explained.
Expected market Availability and TKDN Certification
The Ministry of Industry (Kementerian Perindustrian) anticipates the iPhone 17 will be available for sale in Indonesia in early October 2025. This timeline follows Apple’s recent submission of documentation to obtain a certificate verifying the domestic component level (TKDN) of the iPhone 17. The TKDN certificate was expected to be issued on the evening of Thursday,September 5,2024,according to Heru Kustanto,Head of the Center for Increasing the Use of Domestic Products (P3DN) at the Ministry of Industry.
Following TKDN certification, Apple must secure a marketing authorization from the Ministry of Dialog and Digital (Kementerian komunikasi dan Informatika) along with the import approval from the Ministry of Trade.
Meaningful Investment in Indonesian Manufacturing
Apple is making significant investments in Indonesia, including the construction of a vendor factory in Batam. This factory is projected to supply 65% of global air needs and represents an initial investment of $1 billion (approximately Rp16 trillion as of september 12, 2024). The project is expected to create up to 2,000 jobs.
Apple aims to increase its total investment in Indonesia to $10 billion. The Batam vendor factory is slated for completion in early 2026.
