Diplomatic negotiations between the United States and Iran in Islamabad, Pakistan, have failed to reach an agreement, with both delegations reporting significant disagreements over core issues.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman stated that views diverged on several important issues during the talks. Reports from The Times of India indicate that Iran characterized the demands made by the United States as unlawful requests
and cited a breach of promises
by the U.S. Government.
U.S. Vice President JD Vance, who met with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during the diplomatic effort, stated that there are shortcomings in the talks. Vance noted that the Iranian delegation chose not to accept certain terms and asserted that Tehran must make a fundamental commitment
not to develop nuclear weapons.
Background of the Diplomatic Window
The talks in Islamabad occurred during a temporary cessation of hostilities. On April 7, 2026, President Donald Trump announced a two-week suspension of U.S. Bombing and attacks against Iran. This decision followed requests from Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir.

Based on conversations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, of Pakistan and wherein they requested that I hold off the destructive force being sent tonight to Iran, and subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks
Donald Trump
President Trump stated at the time that a 10-point proposal received from Iran provided a workable basis on which to negotiate
and that the two-week window would allow a definitive agreement concerning long-term peace to be finalized.
The suspension followed the authorization of Operation Epic Fury
. A senior U.S. Official stated that this operation was launched after Washington received intelligence indicating that Iran intended to deploy ballistic missiles either preemptively or simultaneously with American actions against Tehran.
Iranian Position and Regional Escalation
Following the failure of the Islamabad talks, Iranian officials stated that the country cannot secure through diplomacy what failed through military aggression
. Despite the impasse, an Iranian spokesperson affirmed that Tehran remains determined to utilize all available tools, including diplomacy, to secure its national interests.
Tehran also indicated that there was no expectation of reaching a comprehensive deal with the United States in a single session.
The diplomatic failure comes amid broader regional instability. The New York Times reports that Israel has carried out strikes against Hezbollah in Lebanon as the wider conflict involving Iran continues to escalate.
Prior to the suspension of bombing on April 7, the U.S. And Israel had struck 17 civilian targets in Iran, according to the Iranian Red Crescent. Reports also indicated that the U.S. Hit Kharg Island, a primary Iranian oil export terminal.
