Israelis Navigate Stress and Resilience Amid War With Iran

A missile attack in Tel Aviv sent shockwaves through a high-rise, illustrating the stark realities of the ongoing war with Iran.Haim Teichholtz, CEO of a tech company, and his partner sought shelter in their apartment’s safe room when the alarms sounded. Moments later,a massive explosion shook their building.
“The whole building shook, much more than during an earthquake,” Teichholtz said, describing the scene after the blast.Smoke soon filled the room, forcing them to evacuate down the damaged stairwell, a scene he likened to “a 9/11 vibe.”
Despite enduring 20 months of war, Israelis are experiencing a different kind of threat. While air defenses have largely protected against attacks from other regions, the scale and intensity of the iranian missile strikes are unprecedented.
Bruria Adini, a professor of emergency and disaster management at Tel Aviv University, notes that both stress levels and societal resilience have likely spiked since the war’s onset. She anticipates that while initial resilience is high, it may decrease over time as people seek answers and question strategies. Hope, she says, is crucial for sustaining resilience.
Or Halevy, a Pilates instructor and reserve combat soldier, said she feels no more stressed than usual. ”we have been in this loop for so long that we have sort of normalized the situation,” she said, adding that the Hamas attack on oct. 7 was worse because “Here we are dealing with the threat of random missiles.”
However, the uncertainty of the current conflict is taking a toll. Halevy recounted how her mother became “hysterical” when her father went surfing the morning after a rocket attack. “There is much more uncertainty now, and the enemy is more threatening. We knew Hezbollah; this is different territory,” Halevy said.
What’s next
As the war continues, Israelis are adapting to a new reality marked by both heightened threats and a determination to maintain their daily lives. The long-term effects on stress levels and societal resilience remain to be seen, but hope and adaptability will be critical factors in navigating the challenges ahead.
