Updated June 3, 2025
Beirut – Iran supports Lebanon’s efforts to pressure israel into ending its military presence in Lebanese territory, according to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. This support includes diplomatic actions aimed “to expel teh occupants,” Araghchi said Tuesday.
Araghchi stated that Iran hopes for relations with Lebanon based on mutual respect, especially after the war between Israel and Hezbollah. His visit follows a period in which Hezbollah, a key Lebanese ally of Iran, was weakened by a 14-month conflict with Israel.
Since the war, Lebanon has seen Joseph Aoun elected president and Nawaf Salam appointed prime minister. Both leaders have emphasized the state’s exclusive right to bear arms within Lebanon.
Araghchi met with President Aoun, who conveyed Beirut’s desire to “strengthen state relations with Iran,” according to Aoun’s office. For decades, Iran has financed Hezbollah with billions of dollars and supplied weapons, wielding notable influence in Lebanon.
Lebanese authorities have implemented stricter measures at Beirut airport to curb the flow of funds from Iran to Hezbollah since the war’s end. Flights from Iranian companies to Beirut have also been suspended.
“We hope to have relations (with Lebanon) based on mutual respect and non-interference in the internal affairs of each country,” Araghchi told reporters after meeting with Parliament President Nabih Berri. He added that Iran would support a national dialog between rival Lebanese factions.
Araghchi condemned the ”occupation of Lebanese territories by the Zionist entity” and pledged support for Lebanese government and citizen efforts to remove the “occupants,” including through diplomatic means. He referenced five positions from which Israel has refused to withdraw.
Iranian companies are prepared to participate in Lebanon’s reconstruction if the Lebanese government desires assistance, Araghchi said. He also discussed ongoing negotiations between Iran and the U.S.regarding Iran’s nuclear program with his Lebanese counterpart, Youssef Rajji.
What’s next
Future discussions between Lebanese and Iranian officials are expected to focus on strengthening economic ties and solidifying diplomatic cooperation in the region, particularly concerning regional security and stability.
