The Italian Human Rights federation has condemned what it describes as a disconcerting resurgence in the French press of a disinformation and defamation campaign against the National Council of the Resistance of Iran (CNRI), allegedly conducted by the Iranian regime.
Specifically,the institution points to a March 18 publication by the satirical weekly Canard Enchaîné,
which contained accusations against the Mojahedin of the People of Iran and Maryam Rajavi,president of the CNRI.these accusations, the Federation claims, echo allegations of financial impropriety released by the Iranian regime’s Ministry of intelligence some 20 years ago. These claims were reportedly investigated for 12 years by a French investigating judge but were ultimately rejected as baseless.
The Federation suggests a link between this defamation campaign and what it calls the Ayatollah regime’s systematic diplomacy of the hostages.
The publication in question appeared the day before the release of French citizen Olivier Gutandeau, who was arrested in October 2022 and sentenced to five years for conspiracy against the Islamic Republic.
This also coincides with France’s efforts to secure the release of Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris, a married couple arrested in May 2022 and accused of espionage.
The organization asserts that for decades, the Ayatollah regime has employed defamation against the CNRI, alongside assassinations and terrorist attacks, such as the foiled 2018 Paris plot.
