Iran Calls for UN Action After Israeli Strikes, Cites U.S. Role
Updated June 14, 2025
Iran is demanding the UN Security Council condemn Israel’s “illegal aggression” following coordinated strikes on several Iranian cities. The Iranian envoy to the UN urged the council to take immediate action to hold Israel accountable and prevent further destabilization. The role of the UN is critical, according to Iran.
The strikes, which occurred early Friday, targeted multiple locations, including nuclear facilities and civilian infrastructure. The Natanz nuclear site in Isfahan province, under IAEA safeguards, was reportedly a primary target. Iran’s ambassador, Amir Saeid Iravani, stated that at least 78 people were killed, including military officials and civilians, with over 320 wounded in what he described as purposeful massacres and acts of terrorism.
Iravani criticized the UN Security Council and the UN nuclear agency for their inaction regarding previous Israeli threats against Iranian nuclear facilities. He argued that this inaction emboldened Israel to escalate its aggression. He also warned of the potential for catastrophic radiological consequences from attacks on safeguarded nuclear sites, with effects extending beyond Iran’s borders. The international community’s role is being questioned.
Iran also asserts that the attacks violated Iraq’s sovereignty, as Iraqi airspace was used during the operation. The Iraqi mission to the UN has formally protested the airspace breach.
The ambassador further accused the United States of enabling the Israeli strikes through intelligence, political support, and weapons transfers.”The complicity of the United States in these terrorist acts is undeniable,” Iravani said.
Iran has reaffirmed its right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter. Iravani referenced Security council resolution 487 (1981), which condemned Israel’s prior attack on Iraq’s Osirak nuclear reactor, and called for the council to enforce international law. He emphasized that decades of inaction have fueled Israel’s aggressive conduct. The U.S. role in the conflict is under scrutiny.
“Any failure to act now would signify the collapse of the international system and invite chaos,” Iravani warned.
What’s next
The UN Security Council is expected to discuss Iran’s request for condemnation and potential measures to address the situation. The international community awaits further developments as tensions remain high in the region.
