Iran Rejects US Claims of Missile Development as ‘Big Lies’

Iran vehemently denied U.S. Accusations regarding its missile program on Wednesday, labeling the claims as “big lies” following assertions by President Donald Trump that Tehran is developing missiles capable of reaching the United States. The exchange comes as both nations prepare for a third round of talks in Geneva, Switzerland, on Thursday, aimed at finding a diplomatic resolution to escalating tensions.

The rebuke from Tehran followed President Trump’s remarks during his State of the Union address on Tuesday, where he accused Iran of harboring “sinister nuclear ambitions” and highlighted a growing U.S. Military presence in the Gulf region. According to a statement released by the Iranian Foreign Ministry, “Whatever they’re alleging in regards to Iran’s nuclear programme, Iran’s ballistic missiles and the number of casualties during January’s unrest, is simply the repetition of ‘big lies’,” ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said on X.

Baqaei did not specify which particular claims prompted the response, but the statement followed hours after Trump publicly warned of a potential military confrontation should Iran fail to engage in what he termed “a fair and equitable deal.” The U.S. President has repeatedly asserted that Iran will not be permitted to develop nuclear weapons, reiterating this stance during his address to the nation.

Iran maintains its denial of pursuing nuclear weapons, consistently asserting its right to utilize nuclear technology for peaceful purposes. However, the U.S. Remains skeptical, pointing to concerns over Iran’s ballistic missile program and its regional activities.

The escalating rhetoric coincides with a significant U.S. Military deployment to the region. Trump described the deployment as a “massive Armada” heading towards Iran, signaling a readiness to use force if necessary. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi responded to the U.S. Military buildup, stating that Iranian armed forces are prepared to “immediately and powerfully” respond to any potential attack.

Araghchi further indicated that Iran had gleaned valuable lessons from a recent military exchange, referencing Israel’s military actions in June of last year and subsequent U.S. Strikes on Iranian nuclear sites. He claimed these experiences have strengthened Iran’s ability to respond effectively to any aggression.

The upcoming talks in Geneva represent a crucial opportunity to de-escalate tensions and prevent further conflict. However, the deeply entrenched mistrust between the two nations and the conflicting narratives surrounding Iran’s nuclear and missile programs pose significant challenges to achieving a breakthrough.

In a separate development, Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman dismissed as “nonsense” U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s criticism of Iran’s missile program earlier this week, asserting that the United States has no standing to comment on a nation’s defensive capabilities. This statement underscores Iran’s firm stance on its right to self-defense and its rejection of external interference in its military affairs.

The situation remains volatile, with both sides signaling a willingness to defend their interests. The outcome of the Geneva talks will be closely watched by the international community, as it could determine whether the region is headed towards a diplomatic resolution or a dangerous escalation of conflict.
