Iran Evacuates 4,000 Citizens from Syria After Assad’s Fall
Thousands of Iranians Evacuated from Syria Amidst Regime Change
Tehran,Iran – In a major evacuation effort,Iran has successfully brought home 4,000 of its citizens from Syria following the fall of President Bashar al-Assad’s regime to rebel forces. The stunning turn of events saw the rebels seize control of the capital, Damascus, marking a significant shift in the Syrian conflict.
“Over the past three days, 4,000 Iranian citizens have returned to Iran,” announced government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani in a recent press conference. She emphasized that Tehran remains committed to ensuring the safe return of every remaining iranian national in Syria.
An estimated 10,000 Iranians have resided in Syria in recent years. The presence of Iranian citizens was largely attributed to the deployment of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) “military advisors” to support the Assad regime during the decade-long civil war.
However, according to Iranian parliament member Ahmad Naderi, citing statements from IRGC commander Hossein Salami, there are currently no Iranian troops present in Syria.
Beyond military personnel, Iranian civilians also traveled to Syria for religious pilgrimages to Shiite holy sites, such as the Sayed Zeinab shrine on the outskirts of Damascus.
The close ties between Iran and Syria date back to the 1970s, solidified by the restoration of diplomatic relations initiated by Hafez al-Assad, Bashar’s father, before the 1979 Iranian Revolution.
This dramatic turn of events in Syria raises questions about the future of Iranian influence in the region and the potential ramifications for the ongoing conflict.
