Iran Accused of Using Cluster Munitions in Gorgan Amidst Escalating Regional Tensions
Gorgan, Iran – September 18, 2023 – Amidst a backdrop of escalating regional hostilities, Iran has been accused of deploying cluster munitions in the city of Gorgan. Reports emerged on September 18, 2023, detailing multiple explosions heard and ordnance landing in and around the capital of Golestan province. While Iranian authorities have not officially acknowledged the testing of cluster munitions, the Ministry of Defense issued a statement attributing the incident to a “technical malfunction” during a research test of offensive and drone systems in a desert area.
A picture of the submunition was published by Mashregh News,an Iranian news association, corroborating the widespread reports. The cluster munitions in question bear a striking resemblance to those previously showcased at defense exhibitions in Tehran in 2016, raising further questions about their origin and intended use.
Background: A Volatile Regional Climate
The alleged use of cluster munitions in Gorgan occurs within a highly charged geopolitical climate, marked by significant casualties on both sides of the Israel-Iran conflict. According to iran’s Foundation for martyrs and Veterans affairs, at least 1,100 people have been killed in Iran during the recent escalation, including a significant number of women and children.
In a separate but related growth, Amnesty International has called for an investigation into Israel’s attack on Evin prison in Tehran on June 23rd. This incident resulted in the deaths and injuries of numerous civilians, including a child. Amnesty International’s in-depth investigation suggests the attack should be classified as a war crime.
Conversely, the Israeli Health Ministry reports that at least 29 people, including women and children, lost their lives due to Iranian attacks within Israel. A notably tragic incident involved the deaths of four members of the same family – three women and a child – when an iranian missile struck the Palestinian town of Tamra in northern Israel on June 14th. These events underscore the severe human cost of the ongoing conflict and the critical need for accountability and adherence to international humanitarian law.
