Israel Strikes Iran, Tehran Threatens Retaliation amid Rising Tensions
Updated June 13, 2025
Tensions in the Middle East have escalated after Israel initiated a major operation against Iran, followed by a retaliatory drone attack. The Israeli strikes, dubbed “Operation Rising Lion,” targeted Iranian nuclear facilities, military commanders, and research scientists. In response, Iran launched over 100 drones toward Israel, prompting air defense systems to intercept the threats.
Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin, an IDF spokesman, said that israel’s air defenses were actively intercepting the incoming drones. According to Israeli media, the first drones were expected to reach Israeli airspace around noon local time. There were also reports of interceptions in Saudi Arabia and Jordan.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the operation aimed to diminish the Iranian threat to Israel’s survival. defrin described the attack as preemptive, citing intelligence of an Iranian plan to destroy Israel. He said this plan involved iran’s pursuit of nuclear weapons, increasing its ballistic missile stockpile, and supporting proxies against Israel.
Iranian state media reported that the Israeli strikes hit Tehran and Natanz, a key uranium enrichment center. The attacks also reportedly killed Hossein Salami, leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, and other senior figures.
The IAEA said that Iran informed them that the Fordo nuclear site was not impacted by the strikes. They added that the Bushehr Nuclear power Plant was not targeted, and no radiation increase was observed at the natanz site.
The IDF said the initial wave of strikes involved 200 Israeli fighter jets hitting over 100 targets in Iran with more than 330 munitions.

Israel “should await a harsh response.”
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned that Israel “should await a harsh response.” Netanyahu said Israel’s strikes against Iran ”will continue for as many days as it takes to remove this threat.”
The exchange of fire has disrupted international air travel. Dubai International Airport reported flight cancellations and delays due to airspace closures over Iran, Iraq, and Syria.
The U.S.Embassy in Israel ordered American personnel to shelter in place. Prior to the strikes, the U.S. ordered non-emergency personnel to leave Iraq and allowed military family members to leave the Middle East voluntarily.
What’s next
The situation remains volatile, with potential for further escalation. The U.S. and Iran are still scheduled to hold talks on Sunday, tho Iran’s participation remains uncertain.
