Iran-Israel Conflict: Trump Warns of ‘Devastating’ Retaliation as Iran Signals De-escalation

March 7, 2026 Ahmed Hassan - World News Editor World

Tehran, Iran – A new wave of strikes has hit the Iranian capital, Tehran, as tensions escalate following a week of retaliatory attacks between Iran and Israel, and a robust US military response. The conflict, sparked by the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in an Israeli airstrike last Saturday, shows no signs of abating, with both sides signaling a willingness to continue hostilities.

Early Saturday morning, explosions were reported across western Tehran, with state media confirming Israeli warplanes were responsible. This follows a series of Iranian strikes against Israel and Gulf countries hosting U.S. Forces on Friday. The situation remains highly volatile, with the potential for further escalation looming large.

U.S. President Donald Trump has adopted a particularly hawkish stance, warning Iran of severe consequences if it continues its retaliatory actions. In a social media post this morning, Trump stated, “Today Iran will be hit very hard,” adding that “areas and groups of people” within Iran are “under serious consideration for complete destruction and certain death.” He reiterated his call for Iran to surrender unconditionally, a demand rejected by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

Pezeshkian, in a statement released earlier today, announced that Iran will “no longer attack neighboring countries or launch missiles unless an attack on Iran originates from those countries.” He characterized Trump’s demand for unconditional surrender as a “fantasy.” This apparent attempt at de-escalation, however, appears to have done little to quell the escalating conflict.

The conflict has already resulted in a mounting death toll across the Middle East. Six U.S. Soldiers have been reported killed in Iranian counterattacks over the past week, prompting a dignified transfer ceremony at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware, attended by President Trump and other administration officials. A military aircraft carrying the remains of the fallen service members arrived at the base earlier today.

Adding to the complexity of the situation, a U.S. Official and another source familiar with preliminary findings suggest that a U.S. Munition may have been responsible for a strike on a school in Iran. The strike, which occurred earlier in the week, resulted in the deaths of more than 160 people, including children. An investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.

Meanwhile, the process of selecting a new supreme leader in Iran is underway. State media reports that the clerics responsible for the selection are making plans to “introduce the future leader.” Trump has indicated he has “some names in mind” for a “good leader” of Iran, raising concerns about potential external interference in Iran’s internal affairs.

Thousands of American citizens remain stranded in the Middle East as Iran continues to strike Gulf nations. The ongoing conflict has disrupted travel and created a challenging environment for evacuation efforts. The U.S. Government is working to facilitate the safe return of its citizens, but the situation remains fluid and unpredictable.

The current crisis builds upon a period of heightened tensions between the United States and Iran. The death of Ayatollah Khamenei, a long-time adversary of the United States and Israel, served as a catalyst for the recent escalation. Israel has long viewed Khamenei as a key architect of regional instability and a supporter of militant groups hostile to its interests.

The broader geopolitical implications of the conflict are significant. The Middle East is already a region fraught with instability, and the current crisis threatens to further exacerbate existing tensions. The involvement of multiple actors, including the United States, Israel, and Iran, raises the risk of a wider regional conflict.

The international community is closely monitoring the situation, with calls for restraint and a diplomatic solution growing louder. However, with both sides seemingly entrenched in their positions, the prospects for a peaceful resolution appear dim. The coming days and weeks will be critical in determining the future trajectory of the conflict and its impact on the region and beyond.

The situation is further complicated by the ongoing war in Ukraine, which has diverted international attention and resources. The United States and its allies are already heavily engaged in supporting Ukraine, and the addition of a new conflict in the Middle East presents a significant challenge to their foreign policy priorities.

The long-term consequences of the current crisis remain uncertain. However, the conflict has the potential to reshape the geopolitical landscape of the Middle East and to have a lasting impact on regional stability. The coming months will be crucial in determining whether the region can avoid a further descent into chaos.
