A two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran, established on April 8, 2026, remains precarious as negotiations over the country’s stockpile of enriched uranium have reached a deadlock. The agreement brought a pause to 40 days of war, but the fate of Iran’s highly enriched uranium remains uncertain.

The core sticking point in the diplomatic process is Iran’s refusal to accept limits on its uranium enrichment. Following 21 hours of intense negotiations, U.S. And Iranian officials failed to reach a deal, with nuclear enrichment remaining the primary obstacle.

Uranium Stockpiles and Weapons Potential

U.S. Special envoy Steve Witkoff stated that Iranian negotiators admitted to controlling approximately 460 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60 percent. According to Witkoff, these negotiators acknowledged that this amount of material could be used to produce 11 nuclear bombs.

Uranium Stockpiles and Weapons Potential

Witkoff further noted that the 60 percent enriched uranium could be elevated to the weapons-grade level of 90 percent within a period of seven to 10 days.

Both the Iranian negotiators said to us, directly, with, you know, no shame, that they controlled 460 kilograms of 60%, and they’re aware that that could make 11 nuclear bombs, and that was the beginning of their negotiating stance

Steve Witkoff

These figures align with other intelligence and international assessments. The Wall Street Journal reported that Iran’s three primary nuclear sites are believed to hold enough enriched uranium to fuel approximately 12 nuclear bombs. In a separate report citing David Albright, president of the Institute for Science and International Security, it was noted that by the summer of 2025, Iran could produce enough highly enriched uranium for 19 nuclear weapons within three months.

Rafael Grossi, Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), provided a similar estimate in October 2025, stating that the amount of material in Iran could theoretically allow for the manufacture of around 10 nuclear weapons, though he clarified that this did not mean Iran currently possessed such weapons.

Security Measures at Isfahan Facility

In response to the ongoing tensions and the threat of potential seizures, Iran has begun installing barricades at the entrances of its underground nuclear facility in Isfahan. The facility, located 450 kilometers south of Tehran, is a central part of Iran’s civilian nuclear program.

The Isfahan site handles fuel production and operates three small research reactors supplied by China. The installation of physical barriers is seen as an effort to prevent the seizure of enriched uranium by external forces.

Diplomatic Deadlock and International Reactions

The United States has issued an ultimatum to Iran, seeking to change specific points of the nuclear agreement to ensure stricter limits on enrichment. Iran has consistently rejected these proposed limits as it continues to push back against U.S. Demands.

The diplomatic friction has extended to other international actors. A Russian diplomat described the position taken by the United States regarding Iranian uranium as illogical.

As the two-week ceasefire continues, the lack of agreement on the nuclear issue suggests a continued stalemate. While the fighting has paused, the disagreement over the 460 kilograms of 60 percent enriched uranium and the timeline for its potential conversion to weapons-grade material remains the central conflict between Washington and Tehran.
