Updated June 13, 2025
Natanz nuclear facility in Iran”>Following a series of Israeli airstrikes against Iranian nuclear facilities and military targets, geopolitical experts are weighing the potential responses from Iran and the broader implications for regional stability. The attacks, which reportedly killed several top military leaders and nuclear program figures, have heightened tensions in the Middle east.
Israel stated it targeted nuclear facilities at Natanz and Fordow, later launching additional strikes against missile and drone sites. Iran retaliated by launching approximately 100 drones at Israel, most of which were reportedly intercepted. A subsequent missile barrage led to explosions in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, with U.S. military assistance in intercepting the projectiles.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali khamenei condemned the Israeli attacks as a “crime” and a “declaration of war,” vowing a “bitter and painful fate” for Israel. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the attacks would continue ”for provided that necessary” to eliminate the threat posed by Iran’s nuclear and military capabilities.
secretary of State Marco Rubio said the U.S. was not involved in the Israeli strikes, emphasizing washington’s priority to protect U.S. forces in the region. president Donald Trump described the attacks as ”excellent,” hinting at further action.
Norman Roule, former National Intelligence Manager for Iran, said the attack “demonstrated that the Israelis have indeed achieved and maintained operational supremacy over Iran’s air defenses.” He added that it remains unclear what “victory look[s] like for Israel in this campaign.”
Roule noted the timeline for iran developing a nuclear weapon has changed due to the amount and level of enriched uranium. “the amount of highly-enriched uranium that iran has achieved is unprecedented,” Roule said. “The level of that enrichment at 60 percent is unprecedented.” He added that Iran devotes most of its enrichment capacity to 60 percent enrichment, which has no civilian use.
Roule also highlighted that most of Iran’s sites are underground, and its centrifuges are more advanced than in the past, enabling faster production of highly-enriched uranium. He cited Iran’s Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) program as a “stunning advancement.”
What’s next
The situation remains fluid, with potential outcomes ranging from Iran seeking a diplomatic resolution to internal unrest or a recalibration of its regional posture.
