An Iranian official has acknowledged that the nation’s nuclear facilities sustained significant damage following recent U.S.strikes. The confirmation comes amid conflicting reports regarding the extent of the setback to Iran’s nuclear program and the role of American strikes.
Esmail Baghaei, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, speaking on Al Jazeera Wednesday, confirmed the damage. He did not elaborate on specifics but conceded that the sunday strikes, carried out by U.S.B-2 bombers using bunker-buster bombs, had a major impact on the Iranian nuclear program.
“Our nuclear installations have been badly damaged, that’s without a doubt,” Baghaei said.
president donald Trump addressed the situation, stating that the damage to the Iranian nuclear sites was severe. However, he also admitted that available intelligence on the matter remained inconclusive. His comments followed reports that U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities would only delay Tehran’s program by several months, according to a preliminary U.S. intelligence assessment.
Trump and the White House have as disputed that assessment.
“The intelligence was very inconclusive,” Trump told reporters before a NATO summit in The Hague. “The intelligence says we don’t know. It could’ve been very severe. that’s what the intelligence suggests.”
Trump later argued that the Iranian nuclear deal had been set back “basically decades.”
The president also stated on his Truth Social account that the Iranian nuclear sites were wholly destroyed. The White House directed news outlets to a statement by spokesperson Karoline Leavitt, who called the “alleged” intelligence conclusion “flat-out wrong.”
What’s next
The conflicting reports and statements leave the future of Iran’s nuclear program uncertain. Further assessments and diplomatic efforts are expected to clarify the situation in the coming weeks.
