Abbas Araghchi arrives in Muscat for nuclear negotiations.”>WASHINGTON (AP) — Negotiations between the United States and Iran regarding tehran’s nuclear program have been postponed, though the U.S. anticipates a resumption of discussions “in the near future.” This progress coincides with increased pressure from the U.S. on Iranian oil exports.
The core objective of these talks, involving two nations with a history of strained relations, is to establish a new agreement that prevents Iran from developing nuclear weapons. Iran has consistently denied pursuing such ambitions, asserting that its nuclear program is solely for peaceful purposes. In exchange for these assurances, Iran seeks the lifting of economic sanctions that have substantially impacted its economy.
A fourth round of negotiations was initially scheduled to take place in Rome. Both parties had previously cited progress in earlier discussions. However, Iran confirmed the postponement, attributing it to “logistical reasons” cited by the Omani mediator.
Future of Negotiations Uncertain
Despite the delay, washington officials stated they “expect new discussions to take place in the near future,” clarifying that the date and location for the postponed meeting had not been definitively confirmed.
Separate discussions involving Iran, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, initially planned for Friday, have also been called off.Jean-Noël Barrot, the chief of French diplomacy, confirmed this development while in Washington, D.C., where he met with his American counterpart, Marco Rubio.
Former President Donald Trump, who had reinstated a “maximum pressure” policy on Iran, has reiterated his stance, urging negotiation while simultaneously threatening military action should diplomacy fail. On Thursday, he pledged to rigorously enforce existing sanctions, particularly those targeting Iranian oil exports.
Trump Administration Announces New Sanctions
“All Iranian or petrochemical product purchases must cease,” Trump declared via social media. “Any country or anyone who buys any quantity of Iranian oil or petrochemical products will be submitted promptly to indirect sanctions.” The White House has not yet provided further clarification regarding the specific implications of this declaration when questioned by AFP.
Trump’s warnings follow the announcement of new sanctions by Washington against seven companies accused of facilitating the sale of Iranian oil.
In response, Tehran criticized what it described as a “contradictory approach” by American policymakers, citing a “lack of good will and seriousness to progress on the path of diplomacy.” Iran characterized the sanctions as a final attempt by the U.S. ”to disrupt friendly and legal relations between developing countries thru economic terrorism.”
Western nations, including the United States and Israel, have long suspected Iran of seeking to develop nuclear weapons. Iran has consistently denied these allegations, maintaining its right to pursue nuclear power for civilian applications.
France, Germany, the United Kingdom, China, and Russia are all parties to the 2015 multilateral agreement with Iran, which provided for the monitoring of Iranian nuclear activities in exchange for the lifting of international sanctions. However, the agreement effectively collapsed following the U.S.withdrawal in 2018 under the trump administration.
The agreement, set to expire in October 2025, includes provisions for the reinstatement of international sanctions if iran fails to adhere to its commitments.
“In a few weeks,if we do not agree with Iran on a backward return, verifiable and robust of the nuclear program, then we,Europeans, will reapplicate the sanctions that we had lifted ten years ago,” said Jean-Noël Barrot in Washington.
According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Iran is currently enriching uranium to a level of 60%, a significant step closer to the 90% required for weapons-grade material, and far exceeding the 3.67% limit established by the Vienna agreement.
