IAEA is concerned about growing uranium stocks in Iran”>Iran’s Nuclear Program Talks

On November 14, 2024, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi announced that Iran is willing to resolve disputes with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) regarding its nuclear program. However, he stressed that negotiations should not occur under pressure. Araqchi’s comments followed a meeting with IAEA Director Rafael Grossi in Tehran. He stated that the “ball is now in the European Union/European Troika’s court,” referring to the need for France, Germany, and Britain to respond.

During this visit, Grossi emphasized that Iran’s nuclear facilities should not face attacks amid threats from Israel. He highlighted the importance of achieving clear results through dialogue to prevent war. Grossi plans to visit Iran’s key nuclear sites to advance these discussions.

European Powers Push for Action

European nations are preparing to seek a new resolution from the IAEA’s board of governors next week, aiming to address Iran’s alleged lack of cooperation. This move could escalate tensions with Tehran, particularly as Iran has increased its nuclear activities and restricted IAEA inspectors’ access to its facilities. The proposed resolution would require the IAEA to produce a detailed report on Iran’s nuclear activities, focusing on recent uranium findings at undeclared locations.

The European plan aims to encourage Iran to negotiate new limits on its nuclear program in exchange for easing sanctions. Iran had previously agreed to tighten controls on its nuclear program in the 2015 nuclear deal, which the U.S. withdrew from in 2018.

Ongoing Diplomacy

The U.S. is not directly initiating this resolution but is likely to support it. European diplomats are working on the draft resolution with the outgoing U.S. administration. Grossi appears focused on immediate resolutions, avoiding discussions of potential punitive measures in the future.

Iran has diminished its cooperation with the IAEA since 2021, including increasing uranium enrichment levels significantly beyond those permitted by the previous agreement. The outcomes of Grossi’s discussions with Iran will be closely monitored for signs of Iran’s willingness to negotiate.

Iran’s leadership has indicated the need for patience in dealing with the United States. President-elect Trump has not outlined a strategy for talks with Iran but has expressed that Iran should not possess nuclear weapons.
