Iran has granted a conditional two-week window for shipping transit through the Strait of Hormuz following an announcement of a double-sided ceasefire by US President Donald Trump. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed the development on April 7, 2026, though he stated that passage would only be possible via coordination with Iran’s Armed Forces and with due consideration of technical limitations.

The conditional reopening follows a period of extreme volatility in the world’s most critical energy artery. Prior to the conflict, the waterway operated under a traffic system that allowed more than 100 ships per day to pass freely through Omani and Iranian waters. However, Tehran effectively closed the strait shortly after it was attacked by the United States and Israel on February 28, 2026.
