DUBAI (Reuters) – Iran is set to hold crucial bilateral talks with its key Asian partners, Russia and China, on the sidelines of the Shanghai cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit. These discussions come at a critical juncture for Tehran, as it seeks to bolster support following a recent 12-day air conflict with Israel.

diplomatic Maneuvers in Tianjin

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqji confirmed the upcoming meetings, stating, “We will hold bilateral meetings with the Chinese Foreign Minister, who, of course, has its own importance considering the current situation, and also with the Russian Foreign Minister.” These engagements underscore Iran’s strategic pivot towards Asia amidst escalating regional and international pressures.

The SCO Summit, hosted in Tianjin,China, brings together a bloc of ten nations, including major players like China,Russia,India, and Pakistan, alongside Iran. This forum serves as a significant platform for security and political cooperation across the Eurasian region.

Context of Recent Escalation

The diplomatic outreach follows a period of heightened tension, marked by alleged Israeli and US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities in June. While Israel and the US claim these actions were aimed at curbing Iran’s nuclear program, Tehran has consistently denied pursuing nuclear weapons. This recent air war has undoubtedly amplified Iran’s need for strong international backing.

Strengthening Ties with Eastern Powers

Since the re-imposition of US sanctions under the Trump governance, Iran has actively deepened its strategic alliances with russia and China.A 20-year strategic agreement with Moscow has solidified their partnership, while Beijing remains a vital economic lifeline, reportedly purchasing up to 90% of Iran’s oil exports.

The SCO itself is increasingly recognized for its expanding global influence, moving beyond its regional origins. As Araqji noted, “The Shanghai Cooperation Organization gradually opens on the global scene, meaning that it gradually exceeds the regional scene, and it has a number of different issues on its agenda, including economic, political and security fields.” This growing prominence makes the SCO an opportune venue for Iran to consolidate its diplomatic and economic relationships.

The meetings in Tianjin are therefore not just routine diplomatic engagements but a strategic move by Iran to secure crucial support and navigate the complex geopolitical landscape it currently faces.
