Gunmen Target Courthouse in Sistan and Baluchestan
The attack, carried out by a group of three gunmen, targeted a courthouse in the province, which borders Pakistan and Afghanistan. According to a statement released by the IRGC, the assailants failed to infiltrate the building disguised as clients and instead initiated a shootout with police.
Mehr News, citing local authorities, reported that one of the gunmen threw a grenade into the building before being killed, causing casualties among staff and clients. The remaining two attackers were afterward killed in a firefight on the street. The IRGC also stated that the assailants were found to be wearing suicide vests.
Jaish al-Adl, a Pakistan-based Jihadist Group, Claims Attack
The Pakistan-based jihadist group Jaish al-Adl has claimed responsibility for the deadly assault. The group, which is headquartered in neighboring Pakistan but also operates within Iran, had reportedly urged civilians to evacuate the area earlier in the day.
Sistan and Baluchestan province is known to be home to Iran’s Baloch Sunni minority and has been a region prone to clashes between Iranian forces and armed groups. This incident follows a pattern of escalating tensions. In January, Tehran launched strikes against Jaish al-Adl’s headquarters in southwestern Pakistan. This action came after the group claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing that killed nearly a dozen Iranian police officers the previous month.
The ongoing security challenges in the region underscore the complex geopolitical landscape and the persistent threat posed by extremist groups operating across borders.
